Romeo and Juliet was a captivating drama about two “Star crossed lovers.” The significance of this play is Light and Darkness. Shakespeare greatly emphasized this message. Many people can see it because it is a universal theme.

Light and Darkness was shown in a variety of ways. Stereotypically, when people think of light, they associate it with good and likewise with dark and evil, according to enotes.com. William made these stereotypes cross paths, meaning that light isn’t always superior to the dire dark. Daylight was the enemy for Romeo and Juliet. If they were seen together, they could be killed or even banished. On the other hand, the darkness aided them in seeing each other. It was the only time that they could express their love and not be caught.
Juliet detested the day and expressed her sentiment here:
“Take him [Romeo] and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun”
